Poutine Week 2015: Fabergé

Earlier today, I had my last poutine and one of my top choices. Fabergé is one of my favourite places to brunch and I was really excited to try their poutine. Last year, they had an Italian poutine and I loved it. This year, it was a crispy potato waffle topped with braised duck, cheese curds and gravy. Wait, a poutine made with waffle? Yes, it’s possible and it’s wonderful. The flavours blended well together. The duck was tender while the sauce was juicy and slightly sweet.

The People's Waffle

The People’s Waffle

It costed $12, which was a decent price. My friend Sam ordered the signature dish, which is fried chicken and sweet waffles together. It’s served with a homemade BBQ sauce, maple syrup, coleslaw and potatoes. I was so happy she ordered it because I always to try it. When you mix them with the sauce and syrup, you get a delicious mix of sweet and spicy. The portion is huge and she didn’t end up finishing it.

If you’ve never been to Fabergé, you should go soon! The drinks are amazing and the food is good. I tried a chai latte for the first time there and I loved it!

Poutine Week 2015: Melrose Restaurant – Bar

Poutine Week is now over but I had 2 posts left!

Melrose had a poutine, which reminded me of a nice Italian pasta. It had spicy french fries, mozzarella, homemade chilli sauce with red kidney beans and homemade meatballs with mixed meats. The meatballs and chili were spicy and very filling. I love mozzarella cheese, always a good choice in poutine.

Poutine Week 2015: La Banquise

There’s always a line-up at La Banquise whenever I go there or pass nearby, always. The poutine is as crazy as its name. The fries and cheese curds are topped with spicy sausage, bacon, corn, mushrooms and red onion covered with the pepper sauce gravy. A dollop of sour cream is served and atop of it is a jalapeno pepper resting on a piece of salad. It looks simple but it gets heavy pretty quick. The mix of flavours is wonderful being sweet and spicy. The sour cream makes everything better. The jalapeno pepper is super hot but delicious.

Poutine Week 2015: Poutineville

When I heard Poutineville was making a sugar shack poutine, I cried of joy. I love sugar shack food, especially the maple syrup poured over everything. I love maple syrup because it’s super sweet! It’s also a healthier alternative to sugar. This poutine was a must-try in my agenda. Yesterday, I went to the location on Ontario. I was so excited when my plate arrived! A pancake is topped with crushed potatoes, cheese curds, ham, an omelette and a tempura bacon strip. All of it is covered in maple syrup and served with baked beans on the side. How can I describe the flavours? It was heaven in my mouth! Best sugar shack meal I’ve eaten so far. The poutine is extremely intense, I was not able to finish it. I forced myself but I had reached my limit sadly. I’m hoping this poutine will be available for sugar shack season so I can eat it again.

Poutine Week 2015: Pub Quartier Latin

I had really enjoyed Pub Quartier Latin’s poutine last year and was curious to see this one. The presentation was somewhat similar to last year but with different ingredients. Pulled pork, sautéed mushrooms and parmesan reggiano over fries and covered with the famous PQL truffle sauce. Parmesan cheese has a stronger taste but it blends well with the pulled pork and the sauce. It’s a salty poutine and very rich.

At the cosf of $14, it’s for those who like fancier versions of poutine and some French style cuisine.

Poutine Week 2015: Copper Branch

Copper Branch’s goal is “to serve the world real food as fast-food for a change.” The food is exclusively vegan, plant-based and gluten-free. Their poutine has portobello and miso sauce over air-baked fries and vegan cheese. The ingredients are energizing and supposed to wake you up. I didn’t feel tired even if it was lunch time when I am prone to falling asleep. A pretty simple poutine, which tastes healthier. The cheese was melting well and the sauce was different but in a good way.

Poutine Week 2015: Restaurant Copoli

Copoli’s poutine has seasoned ground beef, gourmet sausages, caramelized onions and gravy over fries and mozzarella. It’s a simple poutine but it’s very tasteful with the 2 sorts of meat, which also becomes heavy. Mozzarella is always a good choice of cheese because it melts better I find. The portion is extremely generous, especially considering the low price. Perfect for all the poor students out there.

Poutine Week 2015: Mange-Moi

Mange-Moi were the winner of the Best Poutine voted by the public. Their burger for Le Burger Week was quite impressive when I photographed it in September. The poutine looked quite simple. It’s beer braised beef over fries and local cheese curds, covered with the house and topped with tomatoes and green onions. The acidity of the tomato went well with the richness of the beef. The portion is average and even if it looks small, it quickly fills you up. It always feel reassuring to see vegetables or fruits in a poutine. It gives it a slightly healthier aspect.

Poutine Week 2015: ART:BRGR

This is definitely one of the craziest poutines, which seem almost impossible to finish. The poutine is served in a bowl made out of phyllo dough. Food served in an edible bowl is a wonderful idea. ART:BRGR offers 2 versions of the poutine. The first is with minced meat, merguez sausage and smoked ham. The second is mushrooms, sweet peppers and grilled onions. They both contain fries and cheese curds and are topped with chili peppers, their unique gravy and a sunny side up egg. You have to break the egg so the liquid runs through the poutine and you can enjoy the mix of flavours. It’s very hot and spicy, but the phyllo helps. Its taste is similar to a pita, but crispier. The vegetarian version tastes just as good, simply spicier and lighter. The portion is extremely generous, especially considering it’s for one person.

At the cost of $15, it’s worth trying if you have a huge appetite. Plus if you’re 2, you should try both versions and compare!
